How to tell if a car has been burglarized

A car was burglarised in Melbourne, but not by a car burglar.

The car was reported stolen from a house at 10.45pm on Sunday, and police are urging anyone who saw it to call Crime Stoppers.

A man was arrested for the theft at his home at the corner of North and Main Streets in the suburb of South Yarra, around the time police were called to the scene.

“It’s the first time we’ve had an incident like this,” Melbourne police crime commander Inspector Gary Jones said.

It’s not believed anyone else was involved in the burglary, but officers are investigating the possibility the car was stolen by a man.

There were no injuries in the incident, but a police spokeswoman said the driver’s door was smashed, and a man’s wallet was taken.

She said it was too early to say whether the man could face any charges.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stops on 1800 333 000.

Police have also issued a statement saying the car had been reported stolen earlier in the week, and officers have been working with the vehicle owner to locate it.
